Ear Prosthesis

Nearly all ear prosthesis are now bone anchored as the only alternative is medical adhesive. There is a long list of advantages in the bone anchors for ear prosthesis. The ear is made of silicone with a acrylic sub frame incorporating ‘clips or magnets’. I expect twelve to eighteen months of daily use for a bone anchored prosthesis.

Not that in all camouflage prosthetic, attempts to modify or repair a prosthesis at home  will usually result in irreparable outcomes. Please let me do it.

CARE GUIDELINES:

Your Ear Prosthesis is made of non-allergenic silicone, and has been constructed to be worn next to the skin on a daily basis.

GENERAL CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS:

The Ear prosthesis only requires a wash in diluted soapy water twice a week. Do not rub or bend it excessively.

APPLICATION OF ADHESIVE:

The skin has a natural oily coating which varies from person to person. Before placing the ear prosthesis, wipe the skin area to which the ear is to be adhered, with either “Smith Nephew” skin prep” or the “Holister skin gel.” Your local chemist can supply these products.

The back surface of the ear prosthesis is designed to accept a coating of adhesive. In this case “Pros Aid,” which is applied to the ear prosthesis in a thin coat with a cotton tip stick. Let this layer set, you may use a hair dryer to speed up the process.

Apply a second coating and repeat the drying until the glue is clear. Place the ear prosthesis accurately (you may wish to practice the placement before applying the glue.) With the flat of the hand, press the ear into the side of the face for one minute, this should ensure secure adhesion for up to two days.

I do not advise wearing an earProsthesis for longer then two days without removing the Ear and cleaning the skin area with an antiseptic swab. After this you may reinstate the ear prosthesis. The old glue will just peel of the ear. To remove any glue from your skin just use a little soapy water.

An overnight stint with the ear removed every two days is advised. If the ear presents a small tear in the edge please send it to me for repair as soon as possible, as the tear will quickly expand, if not attended to.
